Why we picked it

A few cloves are enough: their aroma is so intense and sweet-spicy that it perfumes a mulled wine or a pot of sarmale (stuffed cabbage rolls) without you needing much.

About the product

Cloves are the dried flower buds of the Syzygium aromaticum tree (myrtle family), a species native to Indonesia; the cloves we sell come from Indonesia. They have an intense, warm, sweet-spicy aroma, due to eugenol, and are used in both sweet and savoury dishes.

Taste and aroma

Tasting notes

Intense, warm, sweet and spicy, with a slightly numbing pungency on the tongue.

How to use it

  • Put a few cloves in mulled wine, winter tea or other spiced drinks.
  • Stud an onion or a piece of ham with them before baking, or add them to marinades and sarmale (stuffed cabbage rolls).
  • Use them for pickles and preserving, alongside bay leaves and peppercorns.
  • They go into spice blends such as garam masala, five-spice or spice mixes for cakes.

Storage

Cloves keep well in a closed jar, in a dry, dark place with no strong smells around.

Keep somewhere dry and dark. Whole spices (seeds, sticks) hold their aroma far longer than ground ones.
